The Best Foundation For An Inflatable Ad} Sep 04

Submitted by: Andrew Hallinan

Setting up a large inflatable balloon can seem like a daunting task. Very few people have set up an inflatable advertisement before, yet everyone knows that a giant inflatable ad is just that, giant. As with almost everything in life, the foundation to your company balloon is very important. Other articles speak to what kinds of materials to use in securing a balloon rental to an anchoring system, but exactly what kind of anchoring system does an outdoor inflatable balloon need to be considered secure? Here are a couple of questions to consider before you start setting up your large company balloon.

1. What kinds of stakes should be used?

Stakes.

Metal stakes are the first choice. Andy other kind of stake would not be near strong enough to have a chance of keeping your company balloon grounded. And considering that you are setting up a large balloon, the best kind would be 18 to 42 inches long; something heavy-duty and sturdy. Most hardware stores carry them for under $10. Depending on what kind of inflatable rental balloon you have will determine how many you will need to purchase. Also, the more durable the stakes you choose, the more options you have for what kind of surface the rental balloon can be set up on: grassy lawn, rocky yard, or even paved parking lots (asphalt). The only draw back to metal stakes is how much force (heavy mallet or sledge hammer) they can require to be forced into the ground deep enough to be truly secure.

Augers.

Another option for anchoring your inflatable ad are ground augers. The require less blunt force than metal stakes to get deep into the ground. These can also be found at most local hardware stores and provide an excellent foundation to attach your inflatable balloon to. However, be sure that whatever surface youre working on is not too soft, as a strong gust of wind is more likely to pull an auger out of the ground than a stake.

2. What is buried under the ground you are considering? Are there any utility lines?

Because your inflatable ad does require a solid foundation be sure and know where any underground wires, pipes, etc. are in relation to where you are driving in the stakes or augers. In particular, if you are setting up your giant balloon near public property, call the city or local utility companies and ask if its safe to have a 3 foot stake in the ground you are considering. You dont want to puncture a hole in a water or gas line, or electrocute yourself by forcing a metal stake into underground electrical wires. If there are lines near your promotional site but you still want to set up your company balloon there, ask them to come mark exactly where those lines are and how deep so you can work around them.

3. Where is the nearest plug?

Many people forget to consider this question before they start work after having already answer questions 1 and 2. But this final question is just as important. Yes, extension cords can be used, but they shouldnt be the first choice. If your company balloon does need to be set up a ways away from an outlet, be sure and get a heavy duty, outdoor extension cord. You dont want the balloon to die (deflate by the fan not running) and you dont want anyone to get injured.

Three Walmart superstores open in Canada
Sep 04

Wednesday, November 8, 2006

Wal-Mart Canada’s first three supercenters opened in Ancaster, London and Stouffville, Ontario.

The idea originally started in the United States in late 2005 and was announced that it would be arriving in Canada.

Flat screen TVs suspended from the ceiling will feature a television network, featuring fashion shows of Wal-Mart’s clothing lines, TV commercials featuring brands the retailer carries, and corporate messages.

With an expanded selection of electronics, hardware, home and housewares, the Wal-Mart supercentre could be compared to Future Shop, Home Depot, Home Outfitters, Shoppers Drug Mart, and Fortinos. The supercentre has wider aisles, higher ceilings, clear signage, and cash registers in selected departments such as electronics and clothing.

“Our goal is to become the one-stop shop for customers,” said Mario Pilozzi, chief executive of Wal-Mart Canada. “You see how fresh that is today? We are going to maintain that freshness in these stores.”

Wal-Mart’s Canadian supercentres are more sophisticated then their U.S. counterparts, because Canadian grocers have created higher expectations among the average consumer, company officials say.

However, Wal-Mart openings are controversial in many communities. Activists claim they can be detrimental to local economies, driving out locally owned businesses, lowering wages, and leading to suburban sprawl.

Wal-Mart already has plans to open fourteen new supercentres in 2007, of them Scarborough, Sarnia, Brampton and Vaughan will be early in the year.

Mars rover engineers build test sandbox
Sep 03

Sunday, May 8, 2005

Mars rover engineers have built a test bed simulating the condition of the Mars Rover Opportunity, which became stuck in a Martian sand dune on April 26. The test bed uses a combination of materials including play sand for children’s sandboxes, diatomaceous earth for swimming pool filters, and mortar clay powder.

Opportunity dug into soft sand to wheel-hub depth as it drove over a dune about one-third meter (one foot) tall and 2.5 meters (8 feet) wide. “We’ve climbed over dozens of ripples, but this one is different in that it seems to be a little taller and to have a steeper slope, about 15 degrees on part of its face,” said Mark Maimone, a Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) rover mobility engineer. Tests will be conducted using an Earth-bound twin of the rover and the simulated Martian dune to determine how to best maneuver Opportunity out of the predicament before transmitting commands to the actual vehicle.

“We choose to proceed cautiously, so we don’t expect to begin actually driving out of the dune before next week, possibly later,” said Jim Erickson, rover project manager at JPL. “Both Opportunity and Spirit have already provided many more months of scientific exploration than anyone expected. By taking good care of them, we hope to keep them exploring for more months to come. Tests so far have sustained our optimism about Opportunity’s ability to drive out of this dune, but we have more testing ahead to understand how robust that capability is.”

Engineers constructed a simulated dune last week using sand that was already at JPL’s rover testing facility and put a test rover into a similar dug-in position. The test rover had no difficulty driving away, even when sunk belly-deep. However, that sand offered better traction than the finer, looser material that appears to make up the surface at Opportunity’s current position. “We needed to do tests using material more like what Opportunity is in, something that has a fluffier texture and cakes onto the wheels,” said JPL rover engineer Rick Welch, who is leading the tests.

Based on images of wheels and wheel tracks from Mars, Dr. Robert Sullivan of Cornell University, a rover science team member, working with engineers in the JPL test bed, helped match the properties of the test sand as closely as possible with those of the sand beneath Opportunity, “We found that when the wheels dig in, the material we’re using does stick to the wheels and fills the gaps between the cleats, but it doesn’t stick when you’re just driving over it. That’s good because it’s the same as what we see in the images from Opportunity,” Sullivan said. Experiments show that the test rover, after some initial wheel-spinning, can drive out of the more powdery material.

The team went to several home supply and hardware stores to find enough bags and boxes of the ingredients to make more than 2 tons of the simulated Mars sand for the more realistic mobility tests, according to JPL rover mobility engineer Jeff Biesiadeckia.

20 tons of cocaine seized by US Coast Guard
Aug 31

Tuesday, April 24, 2007

The United States Coast Guard (USCG) has seized 20 tons or nearly 40,000 pounds of cocaine with a street value of over US$500 million in what authorities call one of the largest cocaine busts in history.

Three busts in total were made in a period of nearly one month. The first on February 19, off the coast of Mexico, March 18 off the coast of Panama and on March 25, also off the coast of Panama.

In the first bust on February 19, “the Ecuadorian-flagged fishing vessel Don Juan K was approached in the Pacific Ocean February 19 off the coast of Mexico while allegedly offloading cocaine into “go-fast” (cigarette-style boat) boats. The fishing vessel’s crew apparently set fire to Don Juan K in an attempt to destroy the evidence and flee in the go-fasts. The USCGC Sherman stopped the go-fasts and recovered about 900 pounds of cocaine as Don Juan K sank. The 14 crew members are being processed for further legal action,” said a statement on the USCG’s website.

The second bust on March 18 yielded nearly 40,000 pounds of cocaine.

“The 330-foot Panamanian-flagged motor vessel Gatun was interdicted in the Pacific Ocean Mar. 18 off the coast of Panama while heading north toward the United States. Sherman’s crew stopped and boarded the vessel and found 765 bales of cocaine weighing approximately 38,000 pounds in two shipping containers. Gatun was escorted back to Panama and its 14 crew members processed for further legal action,” added the statement.

In the third bust on March 25, at least 2,000 pounds of cocaine was seized, also from a ship off Panama’s coast.

“[The] Sherman’s crew stopped and boarded a small stateless go-fast in the Pacific Ocean Mar. 25 off the coast of Panama following a short chase, in which, the go-fast attempted to flee at a high rate of speed. Approximately 2,000 pounds of cocaine was found aboard the go-fast and its four crew members were processed for further legal action,” said the statement.

Several agencies both in the U.S. and in other countries in Central and South America and will continue to investigate the extent of the drug ring.

“The Coast Guard works in close coordination with Joint Interagency Task Force South, U.S. Attorney’s office, Panama Express South, DEA, FBI, Bureau of Immigration and Customs Enforcement, and Customs and Border Protection, as well as the Departments of Justice, State and Homeland Security on counter drug operations in the Pacific Ocean near Central and South America. These drug smuggling routes are some of the most active, yielding roughly 70 percent of the cocaine seized annually by the Coast Guard,” added the statement.

Eight dead and two missing after cargo ship fire in Kaliningrad, Russia
Aug 31

Sunday, June 8, 2008

Eight people are dead and two more are missing and presumed dead after an explosion and fire on a cargo ship undergoing repairs at a naval dockyard in Kaliningrad, Russia.

The container ship MV Yenisey was the scene of an explosion while in drydock at about 3:00 p.m. Moscow time (11:00 GMT). Ten people were missing after the explosion. It was confirmed today that the eighth body has been recovered, and the remaining two are thought to be dead as well. Three more were injured.

Captain 1st Rank Igor Dygalo, acting as a navy spokesperson, said “Each family of the victims of the fire on the Yenisey civilian vessel will be paid more than a million rubles.” This makes their compensation roughly equivalent to US$43,000.

Dygolo said that the dockyard, in the closed military town of Baltiysk, near Kaliningrad, had been leased to the Yenisey’s St Petersburg owner, a private company, who were conducting the work themselves. He said an investigation has been launched by the navy led by top admiral Vladimir Vysotsky.

Vysotski himself has indicated that serious safety legislation breaches concerning welding regulations by both the vessel’s owner and the naval dockyard’s bosses. He did not go into details, but RIA Novosti claimed that a source at the dockyard said a gas burner applied to the roof of a fuel tank to heat and therefore loosen its bolts had triggered the disaster.

Today is an official day of mourning for Kaliningrad Region to mark the deaths.

Surfing Is A More Beautiful Sport For Its Absolute Reasons} Aug 27

Surfing is a more beautiful sport for its absolute reasons

by

LeenaM

Sports are a nice way of coming together and having a great time. Some sports are termed as extreme sports and this includes snowboarding, skiing, motocross, mountain biking, skateboarding, etc.

One of the interesting things to know is about surfing is that it is the best sports. Here are few absolute reasons:

No broken bones on falling

The advantage of this sport, surfing is that it does not hurt like any other extreme sports. All the extreme sports are sure to hit hard and you have to suffer. If you go on wheels or even travel down mountains, you are sure to sooner break something. However, the hard surface and speed is involved in extreme sports and so be it land or water you are going to have the pain.

With surfing, you just have one board to dodge and air bubbles as wave to cushion your fall. Thus you are safe and you can slide as though you are doing in a Jacuzzi.

Surfing is in the best locations

The best point is that surfing is in the most popular locations. Generally, most winter sports such as snowboarding and skiing are in Majestic Mountain to gaze upon and require multiple clothing layers such that the bag is filled with a kit. At the same time, mountain biking and motocross requires you to look for woodlands, muddy fields or mountains that are really appealing. For the skateboard, you must go for a city break, find suitable obstacles and best rails.

With surfing, there is nothing to worry; you can go to any of the places that have beaches and it may be Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Caribbean, Australia or Brazil. Any budget trip is suitable and a surfing holiday demands nothing more, besides you can enjoy it in the best locations.

You need just board and bikini

This is applicable to biking, skateboarding, snowboarding and skiing. With surfing you can forget outerwear or any protective armor. All you need is bikinis and board that are good. If the climate is colder, surfers may wear a jumper or a beanie. This may be required in some surf locations, otherwise board and bikini is appropriate for most months of a year.

Environmentally Friendly

Mountain bikers also contribute to the woodlands and even the skateboarders give quid to the Greenpeace. It is not that all the extreme sports ignore the environment, but the fact cannot be denied that surfers understand the impact of humans on the environment. Surfers also soap dodge, and does not involve any worshipping.

The truth stays that surfers are much concerned about the wellbeing of the oceans and this is very important. Saltwater lovers and surfers are ocean activists enjoying all that is available from the beach. Among the surfers there are environmental groups who concentrate on being environmentally friendly.

Surfing has historic origins

The surfing origins date back to 300 years. It offers a lovely sight to see people surfing catching with few waves. This game presents a wonderful scene and having an historic origin makes it more special.

If you are looking for a venue finder then look no further. Team building Sydney are your find.

“Camp Casey” moves to safer land, as Mother’s protest continues
Aug 26

Wednesday, August 17, 2005

In Crawford, Texas, anti-war protesters led by American Cindy Sheehan, mother of a fallen soldier, have found a new place to demonstrate. “A kind gentleman from down the road, closer to the Bush ranch, has offered us the use of his property,” said Sheehan to the reporters, as the camp prepared a move to private land.

The property owner, U.S. Army veteran Fred Mattlage, said, “I just think people should have a right to protest without being harassed, and I’m against the war. I don’t think it’s a war we need to be in.”

Sheehan continued to tell the reporters, “He offered it because he heard about the shots fired at us the other day and he didn’t think that was right. He happens to be the third cousin of the person that fired the shots and so he came down and he said he supports us 100 percent.”

The “shots fired” were those of nearby resident Larry Mattlage, whose land borders the protesters at their current location. After complaining about the proximity of the protesters, he fired a shotgun twice into the air Sunday – in order to prepare for duck hunting season, he said. Mattlage says at no time was he ever threatening the protesters with his shots.

Not all Americans agree with Mrs. Sheehan’s position. On Monday, a man was arrested and charged with vandalism of Camp Casey’s memorial for troops lost in Iraq. Around 10pm the previous night, authorities say the accused used his pickup truck to run over hundreds of small wooden crosses bearing names of U.S. soldiers killed in Iraq.

In comments to the press, Bush offered sympathy to Sheehan, “I sympathize with Mrs. Sheehan. She feels strongly about her — about her position. And she has every right in the world to say what she believes.”, he said. However, he has still declined to meet her. “I think it’s important for me to be thoughtful and sensitive to those who have got something to say.” Bush told reporters, “But, I think it’s also important for me to go on with my life, to keep a balanced life.”

Others have commented that Sheehan is being used by those with their own agendas, “What started out as a grieving mom that we all sympathized with has now turned into … an orchestrated far-left campaign,” commented Greg Mueller, a conservative public-relations executive.

A former FBI special agent, Rowley, and Becky Lourey, whose son was killed in Iraq, will leave for Texas on Thursday and camp at the site for a few days.

Rowley said, “It puts a human face on this issue; many people, if they don’t have a personal connection to the troops, it’s so easy for this to become a discussion that lacks seriousness and urgency. I think it’s good to show that there are real people that are being affected.”

“Our children are dying and I think it’s time to go support Cindy and see if Bush will come out and we can say, ‘President Bush, what is the mission exactly?’,” Becky Lourey added. “Truth has been shifting all around and I think we need to rejoin the world community and not occupy another nation.” Lourey said.

Sheehan wants the withdrawal of all troops from Iraq. President Bush claims that leaving Iraq now wouldn’t be helpful for Iraqis or Americans, but only for terrorists.
